LUMINYX SC Segment Controller

The LUMINYX Segment Controller (SC) is an important component in the system that fulfills many functions in two main categories. Through the OLC’s it manages the lamps that are connected to the segment and it provides the interface to the central server over the Wide Area Network (WAN).

The LUMINYX SC-1 is a very powerful and functional component in the solution that enables an entire segment to run as a standalone system. Because of this there is no single point of failure in the solution and road safety is never dependent on Wide Area Networking. The functionality is comprehensive and tailored to the needs of the Outdoor Lighting Solution.

SCHEDULING

The LUMINYX SC is equipped with both a normal and an astronomical scheduler allowing for optimal light level management based on the remaining amount of natural light and fixed schedules. The combination of both allows for the best energy management possible during the 24 hour cycle. For special occasions like Christmas or other festivities there is an exception scheduler that allows for the planning of these “special” lighting situations.

DATA LOGGING

To store and forward the right data to the central server the data logging facilities on the Segment Controller are very versatile. It can hold enough data for weeks so that data is never lost when communication to the server was not established for a while. It is possible to log all the data in the network and set the logging intervals and the types (circular of historical) to suit individual needs. The setting can be different per customer, per geographical area, per segment or even per lamp if needed.

ALARM HANDLING 

Whenever there is anything in the Street Light System that requires immediate attention the LUMINYX SC will generate an alarm and immediately report this situation. It is possible to set alarms for every instance that may occur with the lamp, the power supply or in the network itself, like communication failure or cabling problems. Alarm messages can be send out in all possible formats like sms, beeper or email and can even be accompanied by the relevant data logs. A good example is to attach a log of the [rms] voltage over the last period in the case of unexpected lamp failure. This allows for so that actual cause of the problem can be determined based on actual information.

WAN COMMUNICATION

The WAN communication is completely based on the standard TCP/IP protocol and the SC is unique in providing and managing the communication to the central server. It can handle communication over fast connections like ADSL or Ethernet over fiber and is equally well capable of handling slower connections over GPRS or analog phone lines. The LUMINYX SC has all it takes to minimize traffic and reduce cost in network where communications is charged “per Mega Byte” like GPRS. It has a build in Ethernet interface and an optional analog telephone modem and supports all other ways of communication through the serial and Ethernet interfaces. The security is very good and the unit is even approved for military applications. Or course it is capable of working with a central time server so that all Segment Controller are synchronized over the WAN connection.

To be able to interact with the LUMINYX system from another application, for example to switch to 100% in case of an accident or to “power off” in case of a maintenance situation the LUMINYX SC has various interfaces. There are several software options that allow for interfacing over the TCP/IP infrastructure. If your application is specific and we do not have the interface with it yet we will adapt the interface to your specification and assist in the certification process that might be necessary for such an interface. 

Next to the software interface there are possibilities to set digital inputs on the SC as well and provide feed-back through relais outputs.
